The Northwoods Team Trail continues its tournament fishing operations into the 2019 season.

The Northwoods Team Trail was created by Mark Hanowski and Nick Retka of Little Falls, MN in January of 2018. The founding of the NWTT was due to the closure of another tournament circuit. Tony’s Bass Tournaments ran for a decade, visiting many of the same central Minnesota fisheries that the Northwoods Team Trail targets. Tony’s Bass Tournaments were low-cost, minimal pressure, well-run, and just plain fun. Mark and Nick wanted to re-create/continue these central Minnesota tournaments, with a few minor tweaks, and thus the NWTT was born.

2018 was the first year the Northwoods Team Trail officially operated. The team-formatted, bass fishing tournament circuit visited four fisheries in its first year: Platte/Sullivan Lake near Harding, MN, Mississippi River (Little Falls to Blanchard Dam), and Fish Trap Lake and Lake Alexander in Cushing, MN. Each event went off (relatively) without a hitch. The weather for each event was superb and anglers caught plenty of healthy largemouth and smallmouth bass.

In 2019, the NWTT will visit many of the same fisheries. Repeat fisheries include Fish Trap Lake, Lake Alexander, and the Mississippi River (LF to Blanchard). However, the fishing tournament trail also added two new bodies of water to the docket: Lake Osakis near Long Prairie/Grey Eagle as well as Big Birch Lake near the Freeport/Melrose area. These two fisheries were added in response to a survey set out by tournament directors Hanowski and Retka after the 2018 season, asking anglers where they would like to fish the following year.

2019 should be a great year (like any other) to get out on the water and that’s exactly what we plan on doing. Tight lines to everyone in 2019!
